March Recap: 2023 State Legislative Sessions

The latest from State Advocacy: As March came to a close, so did the end of the third month of the legislative session. Alabama and Florida convened for their 2023 regular sessions, while Wyoming, Utah, South Dakota, West Virginia, Kentucky, New Mexico, Idaho, Maine, and Georgia adjourned. What's next from our team: As states that were active in drone policy adjourn, AUVSI will be putting out end of session reports grading the legislation introduced and engagement of the legislature. See our already-published reports on Missippi, Utah, and Wyoming.

2023 End of State Sessions Report: Mississippi

Mississippi had an active and engaged 2023 legislative session. Due to the interest from the legislature, strong work of the research institutions, and the friendly environment that the State has shown for innovative technology, AUVSI targeted Mississippi from the beginning for our educational Drone Prepared campaign. The state was receptive and encouraging to work with, and within three months Drone Prepared was law. In every way, from legislation to engagement, the Mississippi legislature went above and beyond this year.    

RTCA Brings Industry Together to Address AAM Safety, Integration and Framework Needs

WASHINGTON, DC – March 28, 2023 – Earlier this year, RTCA launched a series of workshops for industry and government participants to address the framework and system requirements of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) needed to support future aviation flight operations. The purpose of these ongoing workshops is to develop industry consensus around capabilities needed to ensure the integration of new entrants and legacy operations in a safe and efficient manner.

AeroX takes major steps toward building an unmanned aviation ecosystem, annual report shows

Winston-Salem, N.C. – North Carolina-based nonprofit AeroX has taken major steps toward building a regional advanced air mobility (AAM) ecosystem since forming in 2021, including launching the development of what business and community leaders expect to become the nation’s first urban unmanned air traffic management system (UTM). These and other results are captured in the organization’s first annual report, AeroX Takes Flight in North Carolina.

2023 State Legislative Sessions: February Recap

The second month of the legislative session has come to an end, with every state meeting for their regular legislative session in February except for Louisiana and Florida. On February 26th, Virginia became the first state to adjourn, with Wyoming and Utah shortly to follow on March 3rd.

This month, state legislatures came into session for 2023. All 50 states will be meeting in unrestricted sessions this year.  States have the ability to push forward the industry through UAS and AAM friendly policy. When states support and collaborate with the emerging uncrewed systems industry, it provides immense public benefit for all.

TruWeather Solutions software simulates and display winds, allowing analysis to identify optimal locations for weather sensors that will support drone operations. Orange areas depict high wind speeds that would not be forecasted by existing weather reporting methods without additional sensing instruments.
