Just a few weeks before Christmas on Dec. 7, 2017, audio/visual and journalism students at Pflugerville High School in Pflugerville, Texas received a DJI Mavic Pro UAS and accessories.

The UAS was a gift from an anonymous donor, who presented it to the Pflugerville Education Foundation specifically for use by PHS. A source close to the donor says that the donation came about “partly because of the impressive work done by PHS A/V and journalism students over the years.”

Equipped with a 12-megapixel camera that can stream video at full high-definition, a guidance system that allows it to avoid flying into obstacles, and a tripod mode for precision usage, the Mavic Pro UAS is meant to “give the program a leg up.”

“This gift will increase our students’ technology and employability skills,” said PHS instructor David Robb, who heads the A/V and journalism programs at the high school.

“It provides access to equipment that is used by professionals in several industries, including audio/video production and journalism.”

Upon receiving this gift, PHS students expressed their excitement about using this technology.

“This is a really amazing donation we have received,” said PHS junior Ian McClure. “I think this drone will help us increase [the quality of] our shots and get new kinds of shots. I think this is a fantastic donation.”

PHS junior Samajae Bonds said, “we’re going to have a blast with that.”

While students are excited to use their new technology, Robb emphasized there needs to be strict adherence to local and federal rules and regulations when using the UAS.

“Teaching students to be responsible producers and consumers of media is at the heart of our A/V and journalism curriculum,” Robb said. “This includes understanding and abiding by UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) laws and regulations at the local, state and national level.”
